Healthy Soils Field Day
Sierra Foothill Conservancy invites agricultural producers and landowners from central California to participate in an educational field day focused on the impact of Rangeland Compost Application and Rangeland Seeding on California’s annual rangelands.
This interactive learning experience will feature surveys of trial plots where these rangeland practices have been implemented, alongside presentations from the Sierra Foothill Conservancy (SFC) and its partners.
These presentations aim to assist producers in applying effective rangeland improvement practices to their operations. Economic analyses and ecological monitoring data from all practices will be showcased and compared to control plots.
Cost for this event is FREE but registration is required for attendance & Lunch!

May Speaker Series: Natural Pest Control with Beneficial Insects
Join us at the Center for Land Based Learning Headquarters in Woodland for a discussion about how you can use natural enemies to control pests on your landscape. Rex Dufour from the National Centerfor Appropriate Technology (NCAT) shares his expertise on pest management and creating habiatat for beneficial organisms.
This in-person event is a great opportunity to connect with fellow land stewards, gain valuable insights into sustainable practices, and enjoy a hot pizza and a cold beer. This is a free event thanks in part to a sponsorship from Nugget Markets. Donations are always welcome.

Managing Irrigation in your Orchard: Phytophthora, IPM, and SGMA
Join us for a free in-person event with Colombini Ranch!
We will discuss irrigation and Phytophthora management in walnuts, and how this all ties in with the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). Jason Colombini will share how his family’s operation manages irrigation and its importance for controlling disease and maintaining orchard health and soil integrity. Jaime Ott with UCCE will talk about the research she conducted with Dr. Greg Browne to assess Phytophthora in surface water and how to properly manage it. We will then get an update on SGMA and how UC ANR can support small-scale farmers with SGMA implementation. Additionally, we will discuss the results of a trial conducted on the farm to test different management practices for spider mites, a pest that thrives in hot, dry conditions.

Gopher Management Field Day
Attendees will get introduced to Side Hill Citrus, a certified organic farm that grows mandarins and lemons. Rich Ferreira, the farm owner, and others working on and with the farm will describe the challenges of managing gophers. Then Dr. Roger Baldwin with UCCE will talk about control techniques for burrowing rodents, including gophers and voles and other vertebrate pests, such as using biological control, habitat modification, cultural practices, exclusion, and trapping. Dr. Baldwin will also give a demonstration of how to properly set up gopher traps.
